PLAY - 14th August, 2014 (Penang, Malaysia)

Good day and greetings from George Town Festival!

Scheduled to be one of the highlights of gtf2014PLAY is a production by Eastman (Belgium), choreographed and performing by world renowned dancer-choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Shantala Shivalingappa, premiering in Asia this August at Penang, Malaysia!

"Play" pivots on two intertwined conceits: the idea of play-acting, the role-playing required in theatre, and the games people play.  Games of chess, games of seduction, games of masquerades.  But in the process of evading the self, sometimes more is revealed than concealed.

In "Play", Shantala Shivalingappa weaves in vocabulary of Kuchipudi, both rhythmic patterns and gestural codes, quietly and naturally, into a piece that constructs itself around tales of love and separation.  Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui revels in the expressive canvas this provides where a minute inflection of the hand can transform the narrative, taking him into a world that he does not often get the chance to explore.

"Play" came into being thanks to the insight and impetus of Pina Bausch.  The late choreographer, who had long championed the work of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Shantala Shivalingappa, invited both of them to work together in 2008; they continued to build on that initial plinth, feeling the need to fulfill her wish.

Tickets are available online and trailer is available here.

Appreciate it if you could share the attached posters to your members, community, friends and family.  This is the very first time of both Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Shantala Shivalingappa will be performing in Penang, Malaysia.
